1968 MOTO SKI SNOWMOBILE

YUKON KING SNOWMOBILE

MARCH 13 / 2008

David, Have been to your Moto Ski site in the past, thanks for the memories.

My dad bought a 1968 Cadet around 1969 (it must have been a year old by that time) from
a dealer in Skidway Lake, MI and we lived in Oscoda, MI on the Lake Huron side about
140 miles N. of Flint, MI.  I loved that old sled and spent many a night working on it in
the frozen garage.  It had the single cylinder JLO engine
(also see the pic of my neighbor's Yukon King sled, also with the JLO engine).
You can see my picture from 40 years ago in pic #50.  We really loved that sled as it was the golden age of snowmobiling, with many technological advances happening every year.  In my mind, it was an agile machine, relatively light weight, steered much better than the Ski Doo machines of the time, especially at slow speeds.  The JLO was very reliable, and as with most
engines of the time without all of the modern perks would occasionally flood and foul the plug so
you got used to taking the plug out a lot.  I think we may have replaced the starter cord (aircraft cable type) once or twice. We had one fuel leak and the front cowl got one or two fiberglass
repairs from bumps and bruises. I think I had the bogies and track off a few times to replace springs and lubrication.  The rear seat back, being plastic, was not up to the task, and got
replaced at least once.  Of course it went thru a few windshields.  Heck, I even took it to a
couple of local snowmobile drag races, and I remember racing against a
metalflake Scorpion one time in my class.  Imagine racing a single cylinder sled today!
I thought the belt clutch converter on this sled worked pretty good but
those belts did need replacing every so often.

I went off to Michigan Tech in the fall of 1973 and my
youngest brother drove it for at least 3-4 more years, until it had a ski failure one time.
He left it overnight off our property, and alas, it got several parts stolen off it, and that
was its demise.  So I always thought highly of the original
Industries Bouchard and the nice machine they made.

These days I work for American ....... in Charleston, SC, and haven't been on a sled in years.
However, I do get up to Quebec City once in a while, so some day I would like to run across
someone who has one of those old Cadet sleds and take it for a memorable ride.

Again, thanks for maintaining the site.

Sincerely,  Mike Brandt
