HERE IS HOW THIS AD READ ON EBAY. I am offering
a very rare collectable vintage snowmobile.
The TX Playmates were only built one year. They were banned by the USSA (United States Snowmobile Association) from all forms of snowmobile racing in the summer of 1970 due to the danger to the riders who were brave enough to try racing one. According to several racers who raced against them "They were in our way at every corner" "They passed everything down the straight away and then piled up in the corners." This makes them a very unusual snowmobile in either the stock or racing forms. The stock TX Playmate was built in Canada and made of steel. The aluminum factory racers were built at the Polaris factory in Roseau MN USA. This is one of those very rare machines. The racers had almost no parts in common with the stockers. This machine was restored around 8 years ago and has had very minimal use since then. It is correct with the HD Tillotson carbs, Polaris's very first aluminum clutch, NOS (new, old stock) racer hood with the extra-wide clutch scoop to fit over the aluminum clutch, wide racer-only race stripe, NOS decals, aluminum tunnel, NOS slide rail suspension, NOS cleated track, NOS rear wheels, "fish pipe" expansion chamber racing exhaust (loud), NOS cables and brake pad. I replaced all the bearings, bolts and used as many other NOS parts that I could find in about 10 years of searching. I purchased this sled from the fellow who puts on the largest vintage snowmobile show in the midwest back in the '90's. It came without a data tag so I installed a reproduction tag and coded it for the 440 engine, hence the 000001 serial number. I started the machine today and while it ran OK, it wouldn't idle well so I guess it needs a little more carb tuning. It ran fine at midrange to full throttle but required me to burp the throttle to keep it running at slow speed. I've often thought the HD's were a bit big for these engines but that's what they originally ran so that's what it got. The engine is freshly professionally rebuilt 2 years ago and never completely dialed in or used much since then. It probably has 20 minutes on it since the restoration and 10 minutes since the engine rebuild. The sled is not absolutely perfect but it is the best aluminum racer I've ever seen. I've owned 4 TX Playmates and this is by far the best one. Ended:
