NORTHWAY RX 440 FACTORY RACER SNOWMOBILE
1972 NORTHWAY
RX440 RACER
* Owner / Restorer:
Dennis Bill from Flushing, Michigan
* Northway was
founded in 1970 by Stan McRobert. The original name chosen for the new
company was Norway,
but was soon changed to Northway. A few prototype sleds were built
under the Norway
name, but were never mass-produced. About 600 Northway snowmobiles
were built for
the 1969 - 70 season. The sleds were completely redesigned for 1971 and
production peaked
at 6000 trail sleds built for the 1972 model year. Northway produced
snowmobiles until
the 1974 model year, but over-production by all snowmobile manufacturers
and the oil shortage
spelled doom for the company.
*
This sled was 1 of 21 factory-built racing machines assembled in 1972
at the Northway
production facility,
located in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada. It is powered by a Sachs RX440cc
engine. The color
of the sled was chosen to match the lime green color of a salad bowl that
the
founder of the
company had in his home.
* This snowmobile
was originally purchased by Bill Jones of Lyndhurst, Ontario, Canada from
his uncle, who
owned a Northway dealership in Gananoque, Ontario. After his death in 2000,
his
daughter and
son-in-law started the restoration. They disassembled the machine, but
never
found time to
get beyond that stage. It was at this point that Dennis purchased the sled,
disassembled,
and in 3 separate stalls of their barn.
* Restoration
was completed in just less than 2 years. Dennis Bill
