1969
SKI JET
BY
CMC CORP IN PA, USA.
TWIN
HEADLIGHTS AND ALUMINUM FRAME ON 69 MODEL.
Dave, I Saw
your site. GREAT !
I happened
to see this pic of a 1969 Ski Jet. at this url http://www.vintagesnowmobiles.50megs.com/1_A_SLEDS_WORTH_TEXT_PAGE.html
I'll
give you some info.
The
2 pictures above are a 1969 Ski-Jet manufactured
in Archbald, Pa.
by
a Company named CMC corporation.
A
division of FAB-Weld Corporation of Carbondale, Pa.
It
had an aluminum frame, Sachs one cyl engine,
seats
were made by Levine Upholstery of Carbondale.
The 1969 model
twin head light version was
designed
by Joseph Kelley of Carbondale.
They
also made a
steel
framed,
single
headlight model
for
the 1968 MODEL YEAR.
I believe
his son still has the small model of it.
The
company went Bankrupt in 1969 / 1970.
The
engine mounts were studs welded to the
aluminum
frame ( 1969 model ) and use to tear off from the vibration.
In
the beginning, CMC bought a Ski Doo and tried to copy it with there own
style.
The
Steel version on the 1968 model
was OK,
but
the new Aluminum frame on the 1969 model was
a disaster.
It's
a rare bird as is the steel one.
They
made there own skies and most of the parts.
I
think Ski Doo suspensions will work.
The
track had a v pattern in the center.
Mike
David,
Up until about 10 years ago Levine's Upholstery had all the material to
redo the seat and back.
They had
a fire and lost it all. When the company went bankrupt they stuck a lot
of people in the area.
I had a
brand new track and some parts but scraped it all when my parents sold
there home.
I was in
the factory when they were on the way out and all those brochures,
parts, motors were all over the
floor scattered.
They were going to put a Hirth twin cyl. in one of the models but never
did.
The steel
body one ( 1968 MODEL )
that was out first had a squared tapered nose
with single head light.
I had one
but no pictures.
Mike
David,
I'll try to get some further information. We have a business
that sold to CMC & Fab-Weld.
We
were one of the local businesses that CMC owed money to when they went
out of business.
When
they started, CMC purchased a Ski Doo tore it down to see how it was made.
They
came out with the steel chassis model ( 1968 ). The hood was a different
shape.
The
twin headlight model ( 1969 ) was designed by Joseph Kelly senior.
His
son used to have a small scale model of that sled.
The
steel was the 1968 model (not too many sold).
The
one you have ( 1969 ) was plagued with problems.
The
Aluminum frame in the back used to split, the motor mount studs were welded
to that angle iron on
the
front broke off do to the vibration of the one lunger.
They
were a flimsy machine compared to the Ski doo or the Arctic CATS.
The
latter plus the lack of sales and the problems just bankrupted the company.
Nobody
wanted them.
CMC
wanted to give us a couple to satisfy their bill. Fab-Weld
(parent
company) was making containers for the army to ship to Vietnam.
P.S.
I'll see if I can dig up any more Info
Mike
